Autumn Equinox (Mabon)
Autumn is upon us. Mabon, also known as the Witch’s Thanksgiving, is the second harvest festival, and opposite Ostara on the Wheel of the Year.
It is time to start to prepare for the harvest season with gratitude and delight! Here is a list of ideas to celebrate the season:
- Do a major clean up within your home and give items you are no longer using to charity.
- Bake bread or apple themed dishes.
- Have a bonfire.
- Go on a nature walk.
- Make a gratitude list.
- Restore balance in your home.
- Make Fall crafts and create autumn art.
- Visit a local farm or go to a harvest festival.
- Make an Autumn potpourri.
- Decorate your home or your altar for Mabon.
- Journal and set your new intentions.
It’s a great time to restore balance within yourself and within your home. On the Equinox, day and night, dark and light, inner and outer, masculine and feminine, are all in balance before the night takes over—brining darkness along with the death of winter. All things must die before they can be reborn, it is for this reason that all spiritual ascent requires descent first. We are a reflection of the universe that surrounds us, also takes place within us. All those who long for the light must first face the darkness within themselves. It is on the Autumnal equinox, that this stage of inner preparation for enlightenment can begin. In order to make way for the return of the Sun on the Winter Solstice, and its rebirth on the Spring Vernal equinox.
An Autumn Equinox Blessing
The light and the dark are the same in length, they have equal time and equal strength. Soon the darkness will prevail, and the light and warmth will begin to pale. Do not be afraid, do not dismay, for this is the rhythm of nature’s way. Rejoice in the abundance that this year bears. Breathe deep in the coolness and change in the air. Have gratitude and blessing, keep toll, and may this shift of nature enlighten your soul.
