Winter Solstice- December 21, 2020
The Winter Solstice celebrates the longest hours of darkness or the rebirth of the Sun. It is believed to hold a powerfully spiritual energy for regeneration, renewal, insight, and self-awareness. According to alokananad.com, “The Spiritual and energetic significance of the Winter Solstice is multi-layered, but the most direct relevance is that it symbolizes the birth of the Sun.” This can also be seen as a representation of the birth of Christ.
The Winter Solstice Astrologically
The Winter Solstice falls on the Sagittarius-Capricorn cusp. This has been known as the cusp of Prophecy. The planets Jupiter and Saturn play a pivotal role on this cusp. Jupiter is known as the Great Benefic planet, whereas Saturn is known as the Great Malefic. This gives us a theme of expansion verses restrictions, and freedom verses limitations.
When dealing with the Sagittarius-Capricorn cusp, we will be dealing with higher energies surrounding life themes and matters. This is ninth and tenth house energy. Themes such as mysticism, spirituality, and higher knowledge are all connected here. We also see a focus on the mid-heaven. The mid-heaven is connected with a person’s rise in ranking and status in life. This is why the winter solstice can bring in promotions and recognition for many on a collective level.
Simple Winter Solstice Rituals
Some of these simple winter solstice rituals resemble Christmas traditions. Since it is the darkest day, it is the best time to reach into the light. Lighting a candle or candles and giving thanks for the year can light up the darkness. Simply journaling or meditating in front of fireplace also brings the light forward and helps with intention setting. Burning a Yule log can also help. Set up a sacred space for meditation and/or prayer. It is also a great time to get crafty. Make your own evergreen Yule wreath and decorate a Yule tree.
